Soft sculpture works design to be installed in bush/forest settings.
This series of works are based on the theme of Monachopsis.
Monachopsis can be defined as persistent and continuous feeling of being out of place. Although this feeling is often a subtle one, these works will be designed to contemplate the growth of that nagging feeling into the idea of a full blown hysteria........ of sorts.
This, like most of my installation works, are derived from personal contemplation, so will act as a semi self portrait, but what interests me about this idea of monachopsis, is that it is something universal. Many of us at some time or another will experience this feeling, although it can become more pronounced for some.
In this case though, I am not creating an installation environment like I have in the past, I am making works to be installed into a pre-existing environment so I am thinking about interactions that may occur in that natural, uncontrolled space. Light, weather and wind are things that I want to consider.
I usually rely on video to create movement in my installation works. In a natural setting, without electricity and with technological restraints, I am thinking about kinetic movement- especially driven by wind. I am not after intricate multidimensional movements, keeping in mind with the emotive ties I have to the monachopsis theme, I would want a more clumsy or lobbing/bobbing kind of movement from the pieces
